Newe Sogobia is not for sale. In the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley, the Newe agreed to settle into a lifestyle of ranching and allow white people to pass through Newe lands; but did not cede lands. In the eighties, Western Shoshone ranchers, sisters Carrie and Mary Dann, were charged with trespass for refusing to pay grazing fees to the United States. The issue went through the U.S. court system to the Supreme Court which ruled that the Western Shoshone lands were taken not, as the ICC had determined. More >>

Bear River Massacre survivors
U.S. soldiers attacked the N.W. Band of Shoshones on Jan. 29, 1863, resulting in the deaths of more than 490 Shoshone men, women and children and 14 soldiers based at Fort Douglas (then Camp Douglas). The attack near Preston, Idaho, at the confluence of Bear River and Beaver Creek, is considered the largest single-incident massacre of Indians in the American West.
It is often overlooked in history books because it occurred during the Civil War. More about the Bear River Massacre >>

*Special thanks to Beverley Davis for her efforts in helping the Lemhi-Shoshone restore our lost ponies with Robert and Loiuse Painter @ the Quien Sabe Ranch.
Also visit the Quien Sabe Ranch - The endeavor of the ranch and registry is to preserve for posterity the few Barb horses left in the United States, and even in the world. With about 100 horses there are many fine stallions, a few mares, and young stock available, especially for people who are interested and able in promoting this rare and special breed...
